Hey, You British Managers! Do You Really "Waste Time"?
According to a recent survey, British managers are seriously overworked. They are at their desks by 8 am, don't leave the office until 6.30 p.m. take work home and cancel holidays because they have too much to do.
However, some psychologists believe that long hours are not always a symptom of overwork, but often they are a result of "sloppiness". There are, as psychologists write, "too many routine meetings at which nothing is decided, too many letters which confirm what everyone al ready knows, too many interdepartmental memos and too little effective delegation".
The pundits criticise the amount of paperwork needed for simple processes. They report that one manager showed him five pages of forms he had to fill in to authorise a payment. Systems like these are "designed by middle-management bureaucrats" to protect their positions, they claim, concluding that, "the British do not work I harder than other managers in the world. They are just more efficient at wasting time."
Britain's managing directors increased their total pay by an average of 21 per cent last year, according to some polls, which reported on figures published by a firm of management consultants. The average basic pay for chief executives is £ 105,000, but this is more than doubled when bonuses, pensions and other benefits are taken into account. Britain's top managers are fifth in the international pay league, behind Canadian, French, Italian and American executives.
