No More Fish And Chips?

New research on the eating habits of European workers appears to confirm national stereotypes, as I read in some newspapers. The French prefer steak and "pommes frites"; the Germans salad and "Wiener schnitzel", the Italians pasta.

Most Britons, however, were found to be concerned about their health and would rather eat salad than the traditional fish and chips or steak and kidney pie.

According to some researches, it was also shown that more than 90 per cent of British workers take less than an hour for lunch, with two in every five workers taking less than half an hour.

In contrast, the French spend more time and more money on their lunch, with nearly a quarter of French workers taking more than an hour. The average price of a canteen lunch in Britain is 86p, compared with £2.41 in France.

Italians and Germans fit between these two extremes, although 12 per cent of Italians enjoy the luxury of a lunch break of more than two hours.
